The growing importance of Physician Associates and their regulation in the NHS

Physician Associates

We’ve seen a rise in requests from our NHS clients looking to include Physician Associates (PAs) in their appraisal and revalidation licenses. Given this increased demand, we thought it would be helpful to clarify the current situation as we understand it.

The NHS recognises that both Physician Associates (PAs) and Anaesthetic Associates (AAs) play essential roles in healthcare delivery. To fully harness their capabilities, these roles must be properly regulated. The General Medical Council (GMC) has set a deadline for registration by the end of this year, with the potential for PAs to gain prescribing rights in the future.

Regulation Challenges for Physician Associates

The regulation process for AAs and PAs is anticipated to be intricate and time-consuming. Progress has been delayed due to factors like Brexit, COVID-19, and political changes, but the GMC remains committed to ensuring robust regulation. This step is essential to boosting public confidence and enhancing patient safety. The GMC has also made it clear that they plan to work collaboratively with both AAs and PAs throughout this process.

While regulation is expected to bring AAs and PAs more in line with doctors, there will likely be registration fees and appraisal processes to consider, including comprehensive colleague and patient feedback.

The NHS aims to qualify 1,500 PA students annually, with a target of training up to 10,000 in the coming years. The future looks promising, though it will depend on how the new administration prioritises the NHS's long-term plan and how quickly changes can be implemented to support the workforce.

Tailored Feedback for Physician Associates

Since their introduction to the NHS in 2002, the role of Physician Associates has steadily grown. With their numbers set to triple over the next decade, the need for tailored development tools and proper regulation is more crucial than ever.

Regulation and Growth of Physician Associates

The NHS recognises the valuable contribution Physician Associates make to patient care. Proper regulation will help them reach their full potential, especially with the possibility of being granted prescribing rights. The GMC is taking steps to ensure this regulation process is thorough, which will further enhance public confidence and patient safety. They are committed to working alongside both Physician and Anaesthetic Associates to shape the future of these professions.

Specialised Feedback Tools for Physician Associates

Our partners, Edgecumbe Doctor 360, are experts in creating specialised multi-source feedback tools tailored to different medical roles. They understand that the standard GMC questionnaire may not capture the unique responsibilities of Physician Associates. To address this, Doctor 360 offers role-specific questionnaires alongside their core Colleague & Patient feedback tools, ensuring the feedback is both relevant and insightful.

These tools are developed in collaboration with health professionals and are rigorously tested to ensure they meet the needs of the medical practitioners they are designed to support.

Distinctive Responsibilities of Physician Associates

Physician Associates manage patient care after a diagnosis by a doctor. While they play a critical role in the healthcare team, their responsibilities differ from those of doctors, and their feedback needs should reflect this. Specialised feedback tools offer insights into their unique duties and provide meaningful input for their development.

The Importance of Training and Supervision

Physician Associates undergo less training than doctors and must always work under a doctor's supervision. Colleague feedback is particularly valuable in this context, helping them become more self-aware and supporting their professional growth. Specialised feedback tools enable PAs to understand their strengths and areas for improvement, ensuring they deliver high-quality care within their scope of practice.

Fostering Continuous Development

Given the shorter training period, Physician Associates greatly benefit from detailed, constructive feedback. Tailored questionnaires provide insights from both colleagues and patients, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.

By offering feedback tools tailored to the unique role of Physician Associates, Doctor 360 ensures that feedback is actionable and conducive to enhancing care quality. We are proud to have partnered with Edgecumbe Doctor 360 for over a decade, and their expertise in psychological and medical multi-source feedback guarantees robust and reliable tools for healthcare professionals.
